It’s year of the tiger and I had an interesting experience in my classroom. We were reading a book with an Asian character and after the book a little girl told my Vietnamese girl that she hated Chinese people because they had pointy eyes.
My little girl, who had gone from cloud nine about a book with a little girl that look like her, crashed into sadness. I brought it up at a staff meeting and a coworker who is Asian talk for 40 minutes about the importance of validating our Asian students within the classroom.
Not only did we read books, we did year of the tiger art projects and dragon art.
We read a book on racism too called Strictly No Elephants.
At home we had a fun little list and when finished the kids got to make an incredible Lunar New Years Lego set!
