Jody turns 46!! Is there a better way to celebrate than going to Mykonos? We woke up early and were very on time for the ferry. Even though our van driver was late. Grrrrr.
The ride was about 2 1/2 hours with brief stops to other islands. It was very crowded and I hated the way you leave your luggage on two racks for 500 people. The ferry has food and drinks and is very convenient. The ride is super smooth and the seats are very comfortable. You have to make sure you are sitting in the right seat, because that can cause problems!! But overall, the ferries are very reliable and comfortable. They even play weird Greek music videos or crime dramas or dinosaur informationals.
Once on Mykonos we were picked up by our van service and proceeded to get lost on Mykonos. The Airbnbs dont really have addresses. They are vague names with google map directions. The problem was, I didn't have the Airbnb phone number or the name of the place, just the Villa name- Afrodite Villa. It was quite unnerving to be in a new place and not know where you are supposed to be with a stressed out driver. I was almost sick to my stomach because we don't speak the language and we don't know where to go. Fortunately I had taken pics of the directions and was able to say a few names that the driver was familiar with. We made it. $100 later.
And boy, when we made it, was it sure worth it. IT WAS STUNNING. The Airbnb was 3 levels. It had a very small couple of staircases. The rooms were not airconditioned, but it stayed fairly cool because of the breezes. The beds were not comfortable at all, but the veranda made up for it all. It was the patio from dreams. It had 3 large couches with pillows to match. The sea breeze cools you off and as you sit eating your morning breakfast, or enjoying tomatoes and a side of feta with family you can't help but be grateful. The brown hills are not much to look at, but combined with the bay and the yachts and the tranquil gardens... the sea hits you and relaxes you.
After we arrived I walked about 1.5 down to the grocery store to get water and groceries. It was long and hot, but doable. The hills!!! But the hardest part is the traffic and small streets. It's actually very dangerous and made it so I didn't want to run. Truly, the drivers all drove like they were drunk. Plus there were very big tour buses that took up huge portions of the road and there are no sidewalks.
We ended up spending time in the Villa's pool and private beach area. The Aegean Sea is VERY SALTY!!! And was the coldest water of the whole trip. Yet it was still absolutely stunning and beautiful. It was great to just relax, have food to munch on, and enjoy the sunshine after the stress of traveling.
We walked to the mile down to the restaurant area and found a gorgeous restaurant right on the beach. The sun was setting and we were able to sing to Jody Happy Birthday. The food was magnificent. I can't find the words to describe how satisfying each meal was. This particular one was a little surprise for Ella. She ordered shrimp pasta and it came out with the eyes still on the shrimp!! She was completely grossed out. Maria, being the comedian, came in with a great one liner after Ella said the shrimp pasta tasted too peppery. Quote, "Maybe it wasn't pepper you ate." referring to possibly eating the tiny black shrimp eyeballs. The little kids ate and ran around the beach. We took some beach sunset photos and then enjoyed a milder walk back to the villa with less traffic. As the sun set, you could hear the bass of all the yacht parties quite loud. It pulsated and vibrated your bones. We walked up the hill and the city just glimmered. MYKONOS!!!!!!!!!! Definitely different from Athens and quite the party island.
We waited up until 1AM for our cousins to arrive, Jay and Rachel! Once the settled, we were glad to go to bed!!
